Career in Naval Architecture | Amet University

Over the years Naval technology has progressed rapidly and has become an essential factor in the growth of economy and trade. Ships and sea-going vessels along with marine navigation and shipbuilding technologies have undergone massive innovation that has led to the establishment of multiple dedicated fields of study. Naval architecture is one such field of study that is responsible for the growth of this sector.

Naval architecture is the field of science and engineering related to the design and manufacturing of all types of naval vessels such as ships, yachts, powerboats, tugs, barges, cruise ships, ice breakers, warships, and even submarines. It also includes the study of design and manufacturing all types of on-shore and off-shore marine structures for both civil and military facilities. Naval architecture has been instrumental in the advancement of present age marine vessels and ports.

A naval architect specializes in all facets of the shipping industry from design & development to building and repairing. They are also responsible for determining the economic feasibility, safety, quality standards of marine vessels, and related structures. A naval architect is required to have a creative, enquiring and logical mind with the ability to communicate lucidly in both speech and writing to others about topics inside and outside the engineering profession. They are also expected to have sound judgment and good leadership qualities since they work in teams with other architects and engineers to create all types of marine vessels and structures.

The following is a list of career paths that future naval architects can pursue:

Design

Naval architects are expected to have great creativity to design and develop marine vessels that are functional, safe, sea-worthy, aesthetic, and efficient. Few of the marine vessels and offshore structures include:

s Merchant ships — Cargo Ships, Cruise Liners, Oil/Gas Tankers, etc

s Passenger Ferries

s Warships — Aircraft Carriers, Amphibious Ships, Frigates, Destroyers, etc

s Submarines and underwater vehicles

s Offshore Drilling Platforms, FPSOs, semi submersibles

s High-Speed Craft — Multi-Hull Ships, Hydrofoil Craft, Hovercraft, etc

s Workboats — Pilot Vessels, Rescue Craft, Fishing Vessels, Tugs, etc

s Power Boats, Yachts, and other recreational craft

Construction and Repair

Naval architects involved in construction and repair usually hold a management post and are responsible for managing the shipyard or sections of it. They carry tasks such as planning, production, inspection, maintenance, and testing. They are also responsible for managing inventory, human resources, equipment, etc.

Consultancy

Naval architects can act as consultants and provide professional engineering solutions, technical & commercial guidance, project management, and related support.

Marketing and Sales

Marketing and sales involves giving professional advice and technical support to clients in maritime industry.

Operations

Architects are involved in procuring equipment, maintaining overall efficiency and solving problems related to operation costs.

Regulation, Surveying, and Overseeing

Architects are responsible to inspect if the ships are built as per regulations, survey safety and sea-worthiness of a naval vessel, oversee workmanship and material quality and carry out regular inspections to avoid chances of the vessel having any defect.

Research and Development

Like every domain of science, naval architects can pursue the field of research and development to make better, technologically advanced, and cost-efficient ships and sea going vessels.

Education and Training

Naval architects can also pursue the career of training and educating new generation naval architects by joining maritime colleges and universities as professors or lecturers.
