Career in Petroleum Engineering | Amet University

Petroleum is presently one of the main sources of fuel used widely in the world and thus as career students find petroleum engineering as a very attractive and lucrative option. Graduates in Petroleum engineering are called Petroleum Engineers and this domain of engineering deal with the study of production of hydrocarbons such as crude oil and natural gas

Petroleum engineers are usually responsible for the design and development of methods for extracting oil and natural gas from deposits under the Earth’s surface. They are also responsible to find new ways for extracting oil & natural gas from older wells. As this domain demands a person to have a skill set to handle multiple operations, a petroleum engineer needs to have knowledge about many other disciplines of science such as geophysics, formation evaluation, drilling, petroleum geology, reservoir simulation, reservoir engineering, well engineering, artificial lift systems, economics, etc.
There are three types of petroleum engineers:

Reservoir Engineers

They help evaluate field performance opportunities, maximize the final value of a property and enhance the production of oil and natural gas.

Drilling Engineers

They handle the technical aspects of drilling and are responsible to implement safe and environmentally sound practices in the field operations and maintenance.

Production Engineers

They handle the interface between reservoirs and wells and are responsible for the management of oil and natural gas production operations. Production Engineers also assist to maximize profitability by increasing revenue and reducing operating expenses.

Petroleum engineers usually work from an office or work at the petroleum drilling well sites. They often have to travel frequently to these work sites for meeting other engineers, oilfield workers, and customers.

The following is a list of duties of petroleum engineers:
  1. Design equipment for extracting oil & natural gas from onshore & offshore reserves deep underground.
  2. Develop strategies to drill and extract oil & gas from the reserves, and then recover it in the most environmentally safe and cost-efficient way.
  3. Develop innovative methods to inject water, chemicals, gas, or steam into this oil reserve to force out more oil or gas, thus increasing production.
  4. Ensure whether the oilfield equipment is installed, operated, and maintained properly.
  5. Evaluate and inspect the production of the petroleum reserve through surveys, testing, and analysis.
The following is a list of skills expected from a petroleum engineer:
  • Inquisitive mindset
  • Leadership qualities
  • Lucid communication skills
  • Team player
  • Logical and problem-solving thinking skills.
Petroleum engineers find employment opportunities in
  1. Petroleum & Oil production companies
  2. Oil exploration organizations
  3. Petroleum Research Institutions
  4. Oil & Gas Refineries
  5. Private Oil manufacturing industries
  6. Gas production and manufacturing companies
  7. Colleges and Universities

Ultimate revelation of Best Marine Colleges in India

There are many colleges in India that offer courses related to maritime education, however, only a few among them specialize in this domain and can be called a specialist. Maritime education demands an institution to have specialized facilities and experienced faculty to train qualified sailors and engineers. As a graduate aspiring to pursue a career as a marine engineer or a maritime officer, one would spend the most time on the ship and be responsible for goods worth more than 100 million dollars, it is necessary to train them into dependable, patient and adaptable people who are able to handle any situations they may face during their voyage. Thus, here is a list of a few of the Best Marine Colleges in India:

Maharashtra Academy of Naval Education & Training (MANET), Pune

Founded in 2001 as part of MIT, Kothrud Campus, with the approval from Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), Ministry of Shipping, India. It offers a 4-year B. Tech (Marine Engineering) and 3-year B.Sc (Nautical Science). The college has a Ship-in-Campus to train candidates about the operation of the ship and its engine room. The replica is fully operational to give students real-life experience.

International Maritime Academy (IMA), Chennai

Established in the year 1999, International Maritime Academy was inaugurated with the goal to pursue excellence in the domain of maritime education and research. IMA is acclaimed by DGS, Ministry of Shipping, and Government of India. IMA has been certified by International Accreditation Organization (IAO), thus courses offered by the academy meet international standards. The institution provides opportunities to specialize in Marine engineering, B. Sc (Nautical Science), Diploma (Nautical Science), and other GP courses.

Institute of Technology & Marine Engineering (ITME), Kolkata

Initiated in 2000, the Institute of Technology and Marine Engineering has gained much fame for providing quality education to students in the field of Marine engineering. The institution is affiliated to the West Bengal University of Technology, approved by UGC and recognized by AICTE. The campus has a state of art infrastructure and uses modern facilities to impart knowledge. The faculty is highly experienced as the institution places a high emphasis on making a solid foundational knowledge and providing overall development of students.

Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET) University, Chennai

AMET University was established in the year 1992, as an institution dedicated to providing maritime education and training. The institution has a vast campus with state-of-art infrastructure, located in the outskirts of the city of Chennai and has been granted the status of Deemed University in the year 2007. AMET University offers educational programs in multiple domains related to maritime education such as marine engineering, nautical science, shipping management, logistics, pre-sea training, petroleum engineering etc., the institution has a replica ship called ‘ The Jewel of AMET’ within the campus to simulate real-time situations that students would face for training purposes. Overall the university offers exceptional faculty and modern equipment to train students into excelling graduates.

Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies, Mumbai

Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies was established with the aim of developing a pool of highly talented seafarers trained to work on all levels of job in the highly lucrative and competitive shipping industry. The institution claims itself as one of the advanced centers of marine engineering and navigation within the country. The Institute offers different pre-sea, post-sea and offshore courses recognized by DGS, Ministry of Shipping, and Government of India.
